Emily Boon

April 15th, 17:15 - 19:00
Since the late 1990s, transgender identity in Japan has been framed as a “disorder” within the context of the medical term Gender Identity Disorder (性同一性障害, seidōitsuseishōgai). But what does this classification mean for the lived experiences of trans individuals and the broader social understanding of gender? In this insightful guest lecture, Emily Boon will examine:
- The Political Impact: How has the categorization of transness as an “illness” shaped political and social discourse in Japan?
- Voices of Trans People: Why have transgender individuals both embraced and resisted this medicalized view of gender identity?
- The Modern Narrative: Is this still the dominant framework through which transness is understood in contemporary Japan, or is there a shift toward new narratives?
Join us for a thought-provoking discussion about the intersection of gender identity, politics, and medicalization in Japan.
